Quick answers, in plain English. For anything that can change, such as entry rules, we point you to the official source.
Is Dominica the same as the Dominican Republic?
No. Dominica is a small, English-speaking island in the Lesser Antilles in the eastern Caribbean. The Dominican Republic is a much larger country that shares an island with Haiti. Check airport codes when you book.
What should I pack?
A light rain jacket, quick-drying clothes, shoes with good grip for wet trails, swimwear, insect repellent, sun protection and a refillable bottle. Bring a dry bag for the boat trips.
What currency do they use?
The Eastern Caribbean dollar. Carry some cash for small shops, markets and taxis.
Can I hike without a guide?
Short, well-marked walks are fine. For long volcanic routes such as the Boiling Lake, use a licensed local guide. Non-residents also need a trail pass for the Waitukubuli National Trail.
Are there good beaches?
There are some, but beaches are not the main draw. Many have dark volcanic sand or pebbles, and the pale-sand bays are mostly in the north and east.
Can I see whales?
Yes. A group of sperm whales lives off the west coast all year, so trips run year-round. Sightings are never guaranteed.
When is hurricane season?
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. Buy flexible bookings and travel insurance for that period.
How can I be a good guest?
Ask before photographing people, buy from local makers, stay on trails, take your rubbish with you and use local guides. Learn a few words of Kwéyòl.
